Movies on Deck

Muskegon has graciously climbed on board to save USS LST 393’s “Movies on Deck” film series for 2012.

The free movie program was imperiled by high fees charged by Hollywood studios. But supporters of the historic World War II warship's veterans museum, located at the Mart Dock on the downtown waterfront, stepped up in a big way to fund the series for the whole summer.

“I feel like Jimmy Stewart at the conclusion of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ when the whole town shows up to help in his hour of need,” said John Stephenson, museum board president. “Muskegon really came through for Movies on Deck.”

Families and businesses have committed to sponsoring individual movies. But the biggest gift of all came from Waddell & Reed, a downtown Muskegon investment and financial planning firm. That firm is underwriting the entire series this year.

“When I read that the ‘Movies on Deck” was in danger of being cancelled, I remembered how much fun my son and I had watching movies on the LST with a group of fathers and sons last year," said Bob Garretson, district manager of Waddell & Reed.  “I didn't want others to miss that opportunity.”

There is no admission charge, but donations are gratefully excepted to help fund the veteran museum's mission.

Bring the family, your own comfy chairs, blanket, snacks (or buy ours) and head for LST 393.
